BURLINGTON, VT (October 24, 2011) Burton Snowboards and Red Wing Heritage have teamed up this winter to create the Rover Limited snowboard boot, now available in Burton Flagship stores and select local snowboard dealers around the globe.

The Rover Limited snowboard boot combines Red Wing’s traditional style and durability with Burton’s expertise in performance and comfort, and is the first collaboration between the two brands. Inspired by Red Wing’s incredibly popular and traditional sport boot, the 877, the Rover Limited features Red Wing’s signature full grain leather and traditional yellow lacing. The boot’s premium package also includes strategic support and cushioning, and snow-proof gussets for hiking (or shoveling out the truck).
Burton’s own team rider, Jeremy Jones had a hand in the collaboration as he has always been a fan of Red Wing’s classic style. “I am very stoked to see this boot come to life,” stated Jeremy. “I look forward to shredding in them all season long.”

The Rover Limited boot is available now at Burton Flagship stores and select retailers.

Established in 1993 as an expansion team of the Major League Baseball, the Florida Marlins, winners of two world series (1997 and 2003), have been renamed the Miami Marlins and will be moving into a fancy new stadium at the start of the 2012 season. Miami Marlins’ management had a hard time keeping the name, logo, and uniform change under wraps, with the logo being leaked as early as September and, stealing the thunder from a webcast conference unveiling the new look, a picture of the uniforms and a ticket brochure surfaced earlier in the week. This past Friday, the official unveiling took place at their new stadium.

To say I am a fan of Christian Helms, is a major understatement. Here is a great interview with him he did for Method and Craft. If you dont know who he is, you're losing it, go check his work out now!

"Tell us about your background. Where are you from and how did you get started? Have you always worked independently?

I grew up in a small mill town in North Carolina called Bessemer City. I went to college at UNC Chapel Hill, where I earned a degree in journalism before “finding design” and studying at Portfolio Center in Atlanta. From there I went to intern for Michael Bierut at Pentagram in New York. I was up there for about a year but it just wasn’t the right it for me. My southern roots were a little stronger than I liked to admit at the time.

Around then John Bielenberg was starting Project M, which sounded to me like it could be an amazing and defining experience for a young designer. It was. And it let me leave NY without feeling like I was turning my back on all of the great opportunity up there. After M wrapped up I wanted to go somewhere that felt like a better match with my interests, and Austin seemed like a perfect fit. Again, it was.

I moved here in 2003 and worked a year at McGarrah-Jessee before starting my first studio, The Decoder Ring. That eventually ran its course and I transitioned to running a shop focused on larger design work and brand building, Helms Workshop.

Oh, and somewhere in there my Decoder partner Geoff and I started a hot dog joint called Frank.

Seems like it didn’t take too long for you to make the decision to strike out on your own. Was that something you had your sights on from the beginning or did that evolve over time?

I moved to town with a lofty and probably slightly naïve five and ten-year plan. It’s something I’d always hoped to do eventually, but the opportunity arose a lot earlier than I’d imagined it would be a possibility. I talked about it a lot with James Victore, who’s a good friend and mentor. He gave me a lot of encouragement." Read the full interview HERE

Via The Fox is Black

Scott Wise is a designer/developer from Toronto, Canada and he seems like he gets bored pretty easily. Why is that? Because he’s got not one but two portfolios, a business side and an artsy side. I’m focusing more on his artsy side, one project in particular called Feathers: A Study of Form and Habitat. It’s a simple but beautifully executed idea. He made simple shapes of birds, vaguely inspired by Charley Harper, and filled them with a natural texture, giving the birds the feeling of life and movement. Not too fancy, but still really enjoyable to look at. Be sure to take a peak at the rest of his portfolio as well, he’s got some really great ideas.

So I'm aware that this may not be new. A friend of mine Cody Haltom of Public School did a post on it awhile back. But its just so cool I had to post it. I mean, amazing design mixed with baseball?! How can you not love it? It was a funded Kickstarter project, go check out the video HERE. Its really great!

Auburn University senior Bethany Heck created The Eephus League, a product line and website dedicated to—let’s face it—the sport superior to all others: baseball. The Eephus League, named after the incredibly slow junk pitch, focuses on the stat-oriented obsession in baseball, something intensely unique to the sport, and does so in a very fun and appropriate manner. The packaging feels spot on to me: color and type work well together, and while retro typography is being overused, if ever there was an appropriate project, this would be it. I’m glad she referenced the glory days of baseball, as baseball uniforms/logos today are pretty awful.

As Heck states, the major component of The Eephus League is the website, a community-driven blog where users can learn, in Heck’s words, “all of the many facets of the game, from scorekeeping to detailed statistics and how to throw the perfect forkball”.

This is a really well-crafted, fun project, and it seems like a great way for someone new to baseball to begin to learn about it. I have no clue if Bethany is a fan of baseball, but there is an aspect of this that seems like a labor of love. I’m never showing anyone my senior project again.

Well South by Southwest has come and gone here in Austin.

And the city will soon be back to "Normal".
With so much going on its tough to show you just one thing, So I figured I would show some pictures of The Fader Fort that I worked on.

With some amazing people like Kevin Munoz, Will Bryant, Blake Suarez and Shaun Lind, just to name a few. It was a great time, the event was sponsored by FIAT and Converse, so we did some live painting on a FIAT door, teamed up to doodle up a FIAT car! And do custom designed sneakers. Super fun.

The other day I came across some rather insightful lessons from Wieden+Kennedy’s Executive Creative Director, John C Jay. I think these lessons should be drilled into every young designer’s mind.

10 Lessons for Young Designers

1: Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.

2: Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.

3: Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.

4: Constantly improve your craft. Make things with your hands. Innovation in thinking is not enough.

5: Travel as much as you can. It is a humbling and inspiring experience to learn just how much you don’t know.

6: Being original is still king, especially in this tech-driven, group-grope world.

7: Try not to work for stupid people or you’ll soon become one of them.

8: Instinct and intuition are all-powerful. Learn to trust them.

9: The Golden Rule actually works. Do good.

Nothing like a good logo controversy to kick off the New Year: the emblem for the 2016 Rio Olympics was unveiled on New Year's Eve and immediately ran into accusations of plagiarism.

The logo, designed by Rio-based Tátil, "translates the Olympic spirit and the nature, feelings, and aspirations of the athletes, Rio and the cariocas," according to the official guff. "Different countries, athletes and peoples are joined in a warm embrace – in an individual and collective move, which at a second glance, reveals one of Rio’s most beautiful icons, a vibrant Sugar Loaf, radiating joy, unity, celebration, and friendship."

However, a story in the Washington Post, following up on Brazilian media reports, alleged a similarity with the logo of US not-for-profit the Telluride Foundation. Tátil's Fred Gelli put any likeness down to coincidence and noted that the broad concept of people embracing each other is not novel. Quite.

Apparently, Tátil's design was selected from eight finalists, after a five-month selection process that initially involved 139 agencies. As an exercise in box-ticking it does its job: joyful amorphous people? Tick. Suggestion of diversity? Tick. 'Friendly' scripty typeface? Tick. Values that could be ascribed to just about any bidding city? Err.. check.

Lord knows, the London logo has much about it to dislike but at least it's more memorable than this insipid effort.

Considering the affection the design community has for Apple products and the Pantone Matching System, combining these passions seems ripe for success. At least that's Case Scenario's theory with this new line of licensed cases: they're Pantone approved, so you know the hues and ridiculous code names are legit. In total, nine different versions are available for the iPhone and four for the iPad, providing plenty of style leeway should the colorware route be out of your budget. No word on pricing or availability just yet, so for now it looks like our Capsure color identifier will have to remain holstered until more details surface.

Incase is one of the brands. They seem to get it.
The products themselves are simple user friendly pieces, and the artists they select are perfect for this medium.

Conceived by interior designer Michel Penneman and architect Oliver Hannaert, the Pantone Hotel, which has recently opened in Brussels, is undoubtedly the ultimate place of rest for synesthetes and the colour-conscious. Although I have become accustomed to the sight of Pantone mugs in every second gift store, I am quite in awe of this new project that forms a part of the Pantone Universe. Mixing colour therapy and design, each room corresponds to one of seven palettes: earthy/rich (chocolate), daring/fiery (fuschia), vibrant/intense (orange), cheerful/warm (lemon), captivating/esteemed/silky (pink), fresh/eager (green) and tranquil/exotic/exhilarating (aqua).

The actual interior design is relatively stripped back and minimalist in tone, which allows the individual colour palette utilised in each room to visually pop. If I were to visit the hotel in the near future, I think I would go for a pink room. There’s just something delightfully kitsch about the prospect of sleeping in a room that accords to a “captivating” and “silky” chromatic design.

Daniel Reese, a 21-year-old sneaker designer, takes regular Nike sneakers and turns them into works of art. In addition to a Twitter shoe, he’s also also created a Tupac, Google, and Green Lantern custom sneaker (among many other). The shoes are limited edition and sell for around $200 – $250 per pair.

Nike continues to create bespoke experiences for its customers. The latest example is 255 Studio, which boasts a talented roster of “design consultants” who mix sports, design and apparel to produce one-of-a-kind garments. Oh, and about those “design consultants,” they’re members of NYC’s No Mas, a group of creatives with an unmatched eye and passion for mashing up sports and culture.

The current “installation” is named “Hogar y Visitantes” (Home and Visitors), which sees No Mas focus its creativity on an apparel collection that celebrates baseball and its cultural impact. The “visitantes” team of garments draws on the travel experiences of No Mas members in baseball-mad countries, including: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Japan. Those cultural experiences are then translated into garments rich with cultural, historical, and symbolic influences from each nation. Similarly, the “hogar” team of garments consists of pieces that invoke the cultural, historical, and symbolic influence of New York City, regarded by many folks as the baseball capital of the world.

If you love baseball, culture, and clothing, then 255 Studio is a Hall of Fame visit.

I first heard of Aaron Draplin when he did a Layer Tennis match awhile ago, and have been checking in with him and his work ever since.

If looking at the above image suddenly inspires an unprecedented urge to grab a smoke and start puffing away, that’s because Marlboro wants you to buy their cigarettes. Or at least that’s how the conspiracy theory goes. Dutifully reported by Graphicology, it turns that the Ferrari Formula One racing team is trying to sneak an allusion of the Marlboro logo through their speedy car’s new paint job in the form of an abstract bar code that supposedly resembles a Marlboro pack — a tactic made necessary due to a ban on tobacco advertising by the European Union. Fact or fiction? You decide.

"...redesigns by Michael Tyznik, who I think did an amazing job of bridging the gap between design and potential security. His design includes ideas like a holographic strip, which not only makes it easier to tell the bills apart easier but could also be filled with a bevy of security features, I would assume. Inside the strip there are also embossed dots for the sight-impaired, something that current currency definitely doesn’t take into consideration.

This in my mind couldn’t be any better looking. It’s simple and bold while still giving a nod to the history of money in America. If you’ve happened to notice that there’s a lack of $1 you’re right, Michael suggests doing away with the $1 all together and replacing them with coins instead as it only has an average lifespan of 21 months. Kinda interesting, huh?"

If you follow me on twitter, then you know that I am excited for the launch of the new CS5. (Which launched on April 12th)

Here is a look at the new icons. (Click the image to get a better look.) I know this is super nerdy, but, I love this kind of stuff.

After some speculation we now can see the official logos of Adobe CS5, now with 3D and an extra colour added in.

I think it’s a nice gradual change and I think the extra colour will make it easier to distinguish each product rather than the full black letters of the old logos, though I would be interested to know the design decisions behind the 3D aspect on some of the logos – maybe to make them pop more on our desktops?

Interesting thoughts on Logo's and Branding via Drawer

YOUR LOGO IS NOT YOUR BRAND

A brand isn’t a logo. A logo is merely a symbol that represents the brand. Your corporate identity, the stuff found on letterheads and signage, isn’t a brand either. A brand isn’t the product or service that you make. So if a brand isn’t all of these things what is a brand?

A brand is how an individual feels about a company. It’s an individual’s feeling because a brand is defined by how an individual feels about the brand, not what the company wants an individual to feel. Sure companies can’t control how an individual feels, but they certainly can influence the feelings of an individual by properly communicating the qualities that make their brand special.

Have you ever had a client come up to you looking for design work, hoping that you could design them a strong brand? Maybe you thought you could, but you were wrong. Brands can’t be designed.

I'm diggin this new campaign!

The banana industry is probably not the first one you think of in terms of fun creative prowess, despite the fact that “banana” is one of the funniest words in any language. I also doubt that many of us are discerning in what brand of banana we purchase at the store, we simply grab whatever is stacked at the produce section. Nonetheless, one banana brand stands out from the rest, Chiquita. Their bananas easily identifiable by the blue sticker, which has been placed by hand on every single banana since 1963, and has been used as a promotional tool over the years. The latest sticker campaign, created by DJ Neff uses the shape of the sticker to create more than twenty kooky characters and serves as the basis for a significant online attraction. Via Logo Design Love

Simon Manchipp, one of three creative directors and partners at London-based studio SomeOne, said on Twitter yesterday:

“Logos are dead. Yet we have been featured in the new book Logo Design Love as an example of how to do Logos.

“They are a hangover from old-school thinking about branding. There is no desire by the public for a new logo. They are simply an old-fashioned approach to differentiating products or services.”

Upon questioning, Manchipp explicitly meant, “…that symbols invented to accompany brand names are a waste of time, money and effort.”

I asked David Law, Manchipp’s partner at SomeOne (and the man who kindly submitted SomeOne’s designs for inclusion in my book), what he thought of his colleague’s statement:

“It’s something we have been debating internally for quite a while.

“When you look at brands like O2, its success lies in the richness and depth of its brand world (bubbles, blue grad etc.). This forms a flexible branded platform that is instantly recognisable — you could remove the logo and still know the brand. The logo in itself is not the ‘hero’.

“In the past, brands like IBM and FedEx traded on the logo as the ‘hero’. We see it even today.

“So while we all acknowledge that the logo is not about to disappear — and that it is still an important part of any brand toolkit — there is a case for applying more emphasis on brand worlds.

“The ‘favicon’ or ‘twibbon’ is now the equivalent of the ‘black and white fax’ that we all learnt (years ago) was the minimum requirement for a logo to be recognisable as. These are much smaller applications than we have ever had to deal with, and ones where traditional logos are struggling.

“Brands now ‘move’ as standard — being ‘Apple‘ implies all sorts of physics that lend attributes to the brand and do not rely on the logo to do everything.

“Lastly, the amount of platforms, media, applications (and now ‘experiences’) that need to be branded has multiplied significantly with technology. People simply get bored quicker and brand worlds allow the conversation to ‘flow’.

“Yes, the logo is the ultimate ‘rechargeable battery’ of the brand and is the final distillation of all the brand’s attributes BUT what we are debating (and we haven’t reached any conclusion) is that if the brand world is powerful enough, could the ‘logo’ simply be the company name designed in a simple, ownable way? Possibly, dare I say it, with no symbol to sit alongside it?”

Symbol or no symbol is a valid question, and one I talk about in my book:

“Sometimes your client just needs a professional logotype to identity its business. Use of a symbol can be an unnecessary addition.

“This is something you want to determine at the outset of the project. Ask your client if she has a preference one way or another. If the company is entertaining ideas about future expansion into other markets, it might be better to opt for a distinctive logotype, because an identifying mark or symbol might prove restrictive.”

So while Manchipp’s initial “Logos are dead” quote might be over the top, it does raise an interesting debate.

Well, I know its been a little bit since my last post,
but I have been super busy!
Outside of taking some time off for the holidays, I have been working
my fingers to the bone.

I was extremely fortunate to work with
one of the greatest photographers
of our time.

Jonathan Mannion.

The guy has done it all, and done it his way and continues
to be new and innovative.

I could go on and on about the projects he has done, but you should really go to his site, and see for yourself, the list of people he has worked with is a whose who of people that are at the top of their game.

Thank you to the entire team. And I am looking forward to more projects in the future.

Complex magazine recently released a list of the top 100 brands of the decade.

I have to say I pretty much agree with most, some seemed slightly skewed, but still a great list of brands.

Mission Bicycle is a unique company based in San Francisco that sells custom fixed gear bikes. Each bicycle is made to order from a combination of stock parts. They recently opened up a physical retail location with the design help of Greyscaled and Adaptive Path.

As the company used to only exist online, the shop was designed to mimic the look and user experience of the Mission Bicycle website – giving physical presence to a digital brand. Through text displays, logical instructions, and product displays that look like exploded diagrams, customers are easily guided through the process of creating their own unique bike.

This weeks SOTW I am doing yet another classic that is getting reissued.

I remember saving up all my allowance just so I could buy these monsters! And when finally got them I was about 12 years old. I remember never wanting to wear them,
to play basketball, or to the mall, or over to my friends house because I had worked so hard to get them, and I didnt want to ruin them.

Aside from all of the collaborations within Reebok’s PUMP 20 program, the historic sportswear brand looks to bring back a couple of original colorways as part of its 20th PUMP Anniversary. Two colorways will be made available to each participating retailer, each individually numbered and tagged with the respective shops name. All retailers will only receive 29 pairs in each color, releasing along with its own design.

After a month of online voting, the winner of the 2009 People’s Design Award was announced last night at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s fourth annual National Design Awards gala. From of 198 entries, the honor went to Trek Bicycles’ Lime bike.

The Daily Mail reports that cereal maker Kellogg’s is planning to laser etch their logo on individual Corn Flakes in an effort to set themselves apart from imitations and generic brands.

A limited number of boxes with the laser toasted cereal will be put into production before they move foreword with branding some cereal pieces in every box. If it’s decided that it’s feasible, Kellogg’s may apply this questionable branding across a number of thier products.

The Daily Mail explains:

Kellogg’s embarked on the project to reinforce that they don’t make cereals for any other companies and to fire a shot across the bows of makers of ‘fake flakes’.

Helen Lyons, lead food technologist at the company, said: ‘In recent years there has been an increase in the number of own brands trying to capitalise on the popularity of Kellogg’s corn flakes.

‘We want shoppers to be under absolutely no illusion that Kellogg’s does not make cereal for anyone else.

‘We’re constantly looking at new ways to reaffirm this and giving our golden flakes of corn an official stamp of approval could be the answer.

Not really sure how I feel about this? THOUGHTS?

This weeks SOTW is yet another classic.

Now I get emails from people saying I should be highlighting the "New Shoes" that are coming out in limited runs. I hear that, but I have to say, I own these Classic Adidas Rod Lavers and I get people stopping me and asking me about them. As much or more then if I go out wearing some of my "New Shoes"

The RL are very similar to another Adidas classic shoe, with the simple green and white colorway, many others have been done of this shoe, but the original remains the strongest look.

So, I stay true to focusing on good shoes, not just the flash in the pan models.

This could be huge!

I cant believe that the Love Irish Food people are actually claiming that they don't think they look like the same logo!

This could be a huge financial blunder on the parts of the responsible party.

After fifty years of Futura, IKEA will be changing its catalog typeface to Verdana.

Via idsgn:
The font will replace IKEA Sans (a customized version of Futura by Robin Nicholas), and IKEA Serif (based on Century Schoolbook). In an interview with the Swedish design magazine Cap & Design, IKEA’s Ivana Hrdlickova says the main reason for the switch was to allow the company to use the same typeface in all countries (current IKEA typefaces do not contain Asian characters, for example). Being that Verdana was designed for the web, it also allows the company’s image to remain consistent online and in print.

And, I just bought a pair, of the red ones, and they get looks!

Not just because they are red, no. because they are sick.

Vans is still on their game, and still a huge name when it comes to shoe / Skate culture.

I am a huge fan of the retro style shoes, these are pretty much the definition of retro style shoe.

For over 20 years Freshjive has been a mainstay in the street wear game. And its identifiable logo has been there for the whole ride.

But, things change.

"Freshjive embarks upon one of the world's first anti-branding campaigns, in which they will be stripping their logos from not just the outside of their garments, but from the labels themselves."

In an exclusive interview with the Hundreds streetwear blog, Klotz states:

"Throughout the years I've become uncomfortable with this business of branding and brand identity. I'm not the type of person that buys something for the brand name. I've also never done a very good job at creating a captivating identity to our own brand logo. Also, within the streetwear culture, the promotion of a company's brand has become downright silly to me. What's amusing is I still really enjoy designing gear, graphics, and even logos. But when I see kids wearing company logos it reminds of people who are trying to be a part of a "tribe" or "gang", as if they need to be part of something, which seems to go against the idea of individualism in style."

Not sure how I feel about it. I mean, me, I wear a plain white or black shirt everyday, so I may actually wear it, but is it really a smart move for business?
Will younger kids spend the money when nothing really distinguishes the brand?

I'm a baseball fan, been my whole life. I love the heritage of the game, the classic tales and classic stadiums.

I am also a huge of the classic imagery of the game. Logos, uniforms, hats, all of that!

To promote the new Resident Evil game by Capcom, for the Wii console, the developers did a promotional T-shirt that actually doesn't suck!

When worn normally, it just says “LET YOUR DARKSIDE OUT”. But when you flip it inside out, over your head, it has a great looking zombie face! Great shirt in a market where the T shirts are usually some of the worst out there! I mean really.

I was reading through one of my magazines the other day, and found this ad for the new Lunarglide shoe that says, Hold this page up to your web cam and see this shoe in a whole new way!

Now, I am aware that this isn't the newest technology. Other people have done it. I just think its a really great use of technology, getting readers to there website.
