BANGERS Austin

Curtis Jinkins (Now The Neighborhood Studio) is a beast. One of the best in Austin right now. He just finished up work for a new spot thats getting tons of press. Bangers. Place looks great branding wise, and judging by some of the pics online, the food looks amazing. I need to go check it for sure! Maybe even get a free tattoo!

To say I am a fan of Christian Helms, is a major understatement. Here is a great interview with him he did for Method and Craft. If you dont know who he is, you're losing it, go check his work out now!

"Tell us about your background. Where are you from and how did you get started? Have you always worked independently?

I grew up in a small mill town in North Carolina called Bessemer City. I went to college at UNC Chapel Hill, where I earned a degree in journalism before “finding design” and studying at Portfolio Center in Atlanta. From there I went to intern for Michael Bierut at Pentagram in New York. I was up there for about a year but it just wasn’t the right it for me. My southern roots were a little stronger than I liked to admit at the time.

Around then John Bielenberg was starting Project M, which sounded to me like it could be an amazing and defining experience for a young designer. It was. And it let me leave NY without feeling like I was turning my back on all of the great opportunity up there. After M wrapped up I wanted to go somewhere that felt like a better match with my interests, and Austin seemed like a perfect fit. Again, it was.

I moved here in 2003 and worked a year at McGarrah-Jessee before starting my first studio, The Decoder Ring. That eventually ran its course and I transitioned to running a shop focused on larger design work and brand building, Helms Workshop.

Oh, and somewhere in there my Decoder partner Geoff and I started a hot dog joint called Frank.

Seems like it didn’t take too long for you to make the decision to strike out on your own. Was that something you had your sights on from the beginning or did that evolve over time?

I moved to town with a lofty and probably slightly naïve five and ten-year plan. It’s something I’d always hoped to do eventually, but the opportunity arose a lot earlier than I’d imagined it would be a possibility. I talked about it a lot with James Victore, who’s a good friend and mentor. He gave me a lot of encouragement." Read the full interview HERE

Scott Wise is a designer/developer from Toronto, Canada and he seems like he gets bored pretty easily. Why is that? Because he’s got not one but two portfolios, a business side and an artsy side. I’m focusing more on his artsy side, one project in particular called Feathers: A Study of Form and Habitat. It’s a simple but beautifully executed idea. He made simple shapes of birds, vaguely inspired by Charley Harper, and filled them with a natural texture, giving the birds the feeling of life and movement. Not too fancy, but still really enjoyable to look at. Be sure to take a peak at the rest of his portfolio as well, he’s got some really great ideas.

If you live in Austin, then you have most likely already seen this guys work. Josh Row is everywhere in this town! The guys does it all. His work over at No Comply is something you have to see. So I'm aware that this may not be new. A friend of mine Cody Haltom of Public School did a post on it awhile back. But its just so cool I had to post it. I mean, amazing design mixed with baseball?! How can you not love it? It was a funded Kickstarter project, go check out the video HERE. Its really great!

Auburn University senior Bethany Heck created The Eephus League, a product line and website dedicated to—let’s face it—the sport superior to all others: baseball. The Eephus League, named after the incredibly slow junk pitch, focuses on the stat-oriented obsession in baseball, something intensely unique to the sport, and does so in a very fun and appropriate manner. The packaging feels spot on to me: color and type work well together, and while retro typography is being overused, if ever there was an appropriate project, this would be it. I’m glad she referenced the glory days of baseball, as baseball uniforms/logos today are pretty awful.

As Heck states, the major component of The Eephus League is the website, a community-driven blog where users can learn, in Heck’s words, “all of the many facets of the game, from scorekeeping to detailed statistics and how to throw the perfect forkball”.

This is a really well-crafted, fun project, and it seems like a great way for someone new to baseball to begin to learn about it. I have no clue if Bethany is a fan of baseball, but there is an aspect of this that seems like a labor of love. I’m never showing anyone my senior project again.

As part of a campaign for their new “Hot ‘n Wholesome” breakfast menu, Caribou Coffee’s ad agency, Colle + McVoy, created these amazing bus shelter advertisements for the city of Minneapolis. Not only do they look like giant ovens, but the heating element on the roof actually works!!

Its been awhile since I did a Sneak of the Week, mainly because I have been wearing the same shoes for awhile now, buying new ones,
but just new ones of these.
but now I have found a new one! The Nike Windrunners.
Super classic look, retro feel, but super comfy looking.

I have discovered that these puppies are hard to find.

I really don't even need this color, I just want this model. Any tips on how to get me some would be much appreciated!
