..:: HI-DEFINITION ::..

I thought a lot about where to start this thing. I have so much I want to talk about & show and hopefully discuss, but then it hit me. Instead of trying to smack you across the face right off the bat with some cutting edge ad-campaign, or some new installation in the hip museum of the moment, or even what some kids are doing on the sides of buildings/walls. I figured I would go back to the basics. Take it from the top, if you will. So I figured I would kick this off from the beginning.

Wikipedia states:

The term graphic design can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

I have been working in the industry of Visual communication for my entire life. I was never tat kid who paid much attention during my classes in school. I was always busy drawing pictures on the sides of all my notes and homework.

One thing I did learn was the importance of rules.

My good friend and mentor Aimee Blase, taught me that "You need to know the rules before you can break the rules." That makes sense, if you want to do something groundbreaking, you need to get back to basics first. Whether your pitching your next campaign, or working on a new painting.

The ability to blur the line between breaking the rules and following the rules, is the key to a successful execution of visual communication. I challenge any and all designers, artists, photographers, creative directors, production teams, and all others really, to blur that line. Learn the rules, then break them. Rules where meant to be broken after all.

  1. It's so refreshing to get back to the basics - thanks for the clarification and perspective! As for the rules...well, as you say, isn't learning the limits so we can let them go not only the essence of art but of growth ;-) ? Thanks again for the insight!

  3. SunMie ~ You are so right about the comment of growth. Art is, in so many ways, a metaphor for life.
    PLEASE keep posting images! I really liked the ones you have on your site. Also, I love the way you formed your collage.

    Nice work
